A new wave of seismic activity has been recorded beneath Tenerife, according to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), with tremors detected between Saturday and the early hours of this morning, Monday, in two distinct areas of the island.

The first series occurred on Saturday (11th April), in the Izaña area, where a cluster of 16 small earthquakes was automatically detected. Of these, 11 were later confirmed and located. Magnitudes ranged between 1.0 and 1.9 magnitude on the Richter scale, with depths of between 3 and 10 kilometres.

IGN experts describe these as volcano-tectonic events, similar to those recorded in the same area between May and November 2025, both in terms of strength and depth.

A second phase of activity was recorded early Monday morning, between 12:10am and 12:30am, to the west of Las Cañadas del Teide. This included two low-frequency pulses — known as long-period (LP) events — along with several low-magnitude hybrid seismic events.

According to the IGN, these LP events are comparable to those observed in February and March this year, although they were weaker and shorter in duration.

In total, the IGN’s automatic monitoring system detected 38 seismic events during this latest episode. Three of these were manually located at depths of between 12 and 13 kilometres in the western part of Las Cañadas del Teide.

Importantly, the IGN stressed that this activity does not follow the repeating patterns seen since February and that none of the tremors, including both hybrid and LP events, were felt by the public.

The agency also reassures that this type of seismic activity, involving hybrid events alongside long-period signals, does not indicate an increased risk of a volcanic eruption in the short or medium term, meaning over the coming weeks or months.

Finally, the IGN noted that due to the low amplitude of the signals recorded, all data regarding the number of events, as well as their magnitude and depth ranges, remain provisional and subject to revision.
