After Storm Claudia swept across the Canary Islands leaving more than 100 litres of rainfall per square metre in some areas and over 300 incidents related to wind and flooding, the archipelago is now preparing for a new spell of widespread rain in the next few days.

According to the latest forecasts from the European weather model (ECMWF), the upcoming rainfall will be less intense than that brought by Claudia. Strong north-easterly trade winds will return, helping temperatures drop slightly, with daytime highs to fall to around 23°C.

Rain is forecast to begin today, Wednesday, and continue through to the weekend. It will first affect La Palma, as well as the northern areas of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, before spreading across all the islands, particularly on their northern slopes. Fuerteventura is likely to see the least impact.

On Friday, although some uncertainty remains, the heaviest rain is expected in the south of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and on the eastern side of La Palma. Showers may also reach northern Lanzarote, La Gomera, and El Hierro. By Saturday, rainfall will mainly target eastern La Palma and the northern regions of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

AEMET Forecast:

Wednesday:
Cloudy in northern areas with probable light rain early and late in the day. Elsewhere, partly cloudy, becoming more overcast in the southdd during the afternoon with occasional showers. Temperatures steady or slightly lower. Light northerly winds in the eastern islands and north-easterlies in the west.

Thursday:
Generally partly cloudy, becoming overcast inland during the afternoon with light rain, locally moderate in the south of the mountainous islands. Temperatures largely unchanged. Light north-easterly winds.

Friday:
Partly cloudy, with predominantly cloudy skies in southern inland areas and probable light rain. By the afternoon, cloud cover will increase in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and the northern areas of the remaining islands, with light rain and locally moderate showers in the northern mountain regions. Night-time temperatures will rise slightly, while daytime highs remain steady or ease down. Light north-easterly winds strengthening to moderate later in the day.
