The man who died yesterday (Thursday) in a head-on collision between a car and a Global bus in Gran Canaria has been identified as Fermín Carlos Villar Rosales, a former police officer previously convicted of drug trafficking, according to reports by Canarias7 and confirmed by other media outlets.

The crash, which occurred on the GC-500 road, left one person dead and 16 others injured. Emergency services, including the Canary Islands Emergency Coordination Centre (112), responded swiftly to the accident but couldn’t save him.

Villar, who had been sentenced in 2023 to five years in prison and fined more than €3.3 million, was among over 20 defendants in a major narcotics case.

The Prosecutor's Office identified him as a key player in a drug trafficking network, specifically as an accomplice to several groups that smuggled large shipments of hashish into the Canary Islands in inflatable boats from Morocco.

He reached a plea deal with the Public Prosecutor’s Office and served the rest of his sentence, having already been held in custody for three years, at Estremera Prison in Madrid, a facility for police officers, judges, and other public officials.

The bus company Global has activated its emergency protocols and is cooperating fully with the Guardia Civil as investigations continue into the cause of the fatal crash.
