The Lanzarote Cabildo has announced it will receive a direct regional grant of €5.5 million from the Canary Islands Government to acquire 76 newly built protected homes in Playa Blanca, as announced by Cabildo president Oswaldo Betancort.
These properties, part of the third phase of protected housing in Montaña Roja, will be transferred to the Canarian Housing Institute (ICAVI) to be used exclusively for affordable long-term rentals for residents.
The Cabildo will match the grant and invest a further €5.5 million from its own funds to complete the purchase. Betancort stressed that securing access to housing remains one of Lanzarote residents’ top priorities, and that the administration is acting “with determination and responsibility” through significant public investment.
Housing Councillor, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, highlighted that this initiative strengthens the Cabildo’s commitment to expanding the stock of affordable rental housing, particularly in high-demand areas such as Playa Blanca, where monthly rental prices are among the highest on the island.
Once the homes are purchased, the Cabildo will transfer ownership to ICAVI, which will be responsible for allocation, maintenance, and management to ensure proper social use.
Major Investment in Public Housing
Under the current administration, led by Betancort, the Cabildo has invested more than €20 million in expanding public and affordable housing across the island.
Recently, the Cabildo acquired and transferred 42 homes in Playa Blanca to ICAVI, also destined for affordable rent, reinforcing an inter-administrative approach to tackling Lanzarote’s housing crisis.
The institution has additionally purchased three plots of land for future public housing developments: two in Arrecife and one in Uga (Yaiza). It has also become the first Cabildo in the Canary Islands to approve the Youth Rental Voucher, allocating €1.4 million to support young people looking to move into their own property.
