Intense calima and rising temperatures to hit the Canaries on Sunday
Servitaxi Tenesur SL

A thick calima with high dust concentrations at low levels will sweep across the Canary Islands from midday today, Sunday, prompting yellow weather warnings from Aemet.

The agency is also forecasting a noticeable rise in temperatures and strong easterly to south-easterly winds, which in some areas may reach very strong gusts.

At sea, conditions will be unsettled, with easterly or north-easterly winds of force 4 to 6, later easing in the southeast. Moderate to rough seas are expected, along with a northern swell of 1–2 metres.

Island-by-island forecast for Sunday 23rd November:

LANZAROTE
Skies will be mostly clear, becoming partly cloudy with mid and high cloud from midday. A yellow warning is in place for calima with high dust levels, especially from late morning into the afternoon. Minimum temperatures will rise slightly; maximums will climb more noticeably, particularly on northern and western slopes. Easterly winds will be moderate with strong intervals, shifting to southeast during central hours. Very strong gusts are possible on the west side later in the day.
Expected temperature range: Low of 19°C and high of 26°C.

FUERTEVENTURA
Similar conditions to Lanzarote: clear skies turning to intervals of mid/high cloud later. Yellow warning for calima with high concentrations at low levels. Minimum temperatures rising slightly, maximums increasing moderately, particularly inland and on western slopes. Moderate easterly winds with strong intervals at midday, when very strong gusts are not ruled out.
Expected temperature range: Low of 19°C and high of 25°C.

GRAN CANARIA
Mostly clear, becoming partly cloudy with mid/high cloud during the afternoon. Yellow warning for calima, especially on southern and eastern slopes later in the day. Minimum temperatures rising; maximums increasing moderately, potentially notably in the north and high areas. Moderate easterly winds with strong intervals at the north and south tips. In higher areas, moderate southeast winds will prevail.
Expected temperature range: Low of 19°C and high of 26°C.

TENERIFE
Cloudy in the northeast early on, with a low chance of brief morning showers, then clearing. Mostly sunny elsewhere. Calima will move in during the second half of the day, with a yellow warning for high dust concentrations, mainly on southern and eastern slopes from late afternoon. Minimum temperatures slightly higher; maximums rising moderately, potentially significantly in high and mid-altitude northern and western areas. Moderate easterly winds, with sea breezes in the west. Strong southeast winds in central peaks and along the ridge, with the possibility of very strong gusts that could occasionally extend into higher northeastern midlands.
Expected temperature range: Low of 20°C and high of 26°C.
