Heavy rains cause road closures and flooding in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura has been severely affected by heavy rainfall, with extensive damage reported across the island's road infrastructure, particularly in the centre of the island.

The road connecting Triquivijate to Puerto del Rosario remains closed at Tesjuate due to severe flooding, creating major disruptions for residents and visitors.

The situation is especially bad on the stretch between Tesjuate and Casillas del Ángel, where overflowing water has submerged sections of the road.

The ongoing channelling works in the area, overseen by the Water Consortium, have been hindered as drainage basins have become blocked, exacerbating the flooding.

Historical Water Systems Affected

In addition to the road damage, the rainfall has caused harm to the island's traditional gavias, a historic water management system unique to Fuerteventura.

These structures, designed to capture and utilise rainwater for agriculture, have suffered significant erosion and blockages, raising concerns about the preservation of this important cultural and functional heritage.

Efforts to Mitigate Impact

Local authorities are actively assessing the extent of the damage and prioritising repairs to reopen affected roads as soon as possible. The Water Board is expected to expedite its efforts to clear drainage systems and resume channelling works to prevent further issues.

Residents and visitors are advised to avoid the affected areas and stay updated on road closures and weather warnings. The heavy rainfall highlights the challenges of maintaining infrastructure in the face of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, a pressing concern for the Canary Islands.
