Granadilla requests to be declared a "Stressed Area" due to housing problems

The Granadilla de Abona City Council has announced that they have requested the Government of the Canary Islands to officially recognise the municipality as a stressed area in the residential housing market. This proposal was put forward by the mayor's office and received support from all political parties.

The main intention of this declaration is to continue implementing a variety of tools that can contribute to solving the serious housing problem facing residents of Granadilla de Abona in the south of Tenerife. The aim is to promote the social function of housing by establishing affordable rents that alleviate the economic pressure many people face.

The mayor of Granadilla de Abona, Jennifer Miranda, has clarified that with this request, "we continue to make progress in trying to solve one of the most serious problems facing the population of Tenerife, which is the price of housing."

After submitting the request, it will be the responsibility of the Canary Islands Government to conduct a study to determine if rental costs or mortgage repayments exceed 30% of the average income of families in the municipality. If this situation is confirmed, residential areas that meet these requirements can be designated as stressed areas.

This request adds to other actions taken by the municipal government, composed of the PSOE and the PP, such as the release of nearly 300 homes in the Los Hinojeros area of Granadilla and the allocation of over 3,000 square metres of land to the Canarian Institute of Housing for the construction of new public housing.
