The Canary Islands Government has announced an extension to the application deadline for subsidies under the Moves III programme, aimed at promoting electric vehicles and charging infrastructure in the archipelago.
The programme, initially set to close on 31st December 2024, will now accept applications until 30th June 2025.
This decision follows the high volume of applications received and was confirmed by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE).
Mariano Zapata, the regional councillor for Ecological Transition and Energy, highlighted the extension as an excellent opportunity for residents to embrace electric mobility. He noted that the programme had already been extended once due to significant interest, reflecting growing public enthusiasm for sustainable transport options.
The councillor also addressed the challenges his team faced upon taking office, including a backlog in the management of Next Generation EU funds, with only 8% of allocated funds utilised at the time. He credited a comprehensive restructuring and strategic overhaul of his department for the recent success, stating that over 66% of the Moves III applications have now been processed. This progress equates to €45.9 million in approved grants to support the transition to electric mobility.
The Moves III initiative offers two main funding streams. The first provides subsidies of up to €9,000 for individuals purchasing electric vehicles. The second supports the installation of charging points, with grants of up to €5,000 available for private individuals. Zapata emphasised the programme’s role in accelerating the Canary Islands' transition to sustainable transport.
To streamline processes, the government has reduced bureaucracy around the installation of charging infrastructure. A recent amendment to the Climate Change and Energy Transition Act now allows for installations through a simple declaration of responsibility, further simplifying access to funding.
Zapata also highlighted the broader progress achieved with Next Generation EU funds, which have seen accelerated deployment to drive sustainability initiatives. He underscored the importance of these funds in supporting the Canary Islands’ shift towards a greener future.
The newly established Canary Islands Energy Offices play a key role in this transition. These offices provide guidance to citizens and local authorities on available subsidies and offer support for navigating the application process. Residents are encouraged to visit these offices, which operate five days a week during morning hours, either in person or through phone, email, or the official website.
