The Canary Islands Government has confirmed that the subsidised fuel discount for the smaller islands will remain in place for the whole of 2026. The measure will apply from 1st February to 31st December, with quarterly reviews depending on how fuel prices evolve.

According to the regional finance department, the aim is to compensate for the higher costs faced by La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, due to the smaller amount of fuel they consume and the extra transport costs to get it to those islands’ service stations.

The discount will activate whenever the price of 95-octane petrol or diesel (A) on a smaller island, exceeds the average price in the two capital islands (Gran Canaria and Tenerife) by at least five cents per litre.

Depending on this price gap, the aid will range from 5 to 30 cents per litre. Finance Minister Matilde Asián described the measure as “exceptional and temporary”, based solely on real price data and intended to correct genuine imbalances without distorting the market.

Islands benefiting in early 2026

For February and March 2026, the islands receiving the discount are El Hierro, La Gomera, and La Palma.

  • El Hierro: 25 cents per litre
  • La Gomera: 25 cents per litre
  • La Palma: 20 cents per litre

The order also includes a special provision for La Palma, allowing for a higher discount if needed, due to additional transport costs caused by the Tajogaite volcano eruption.

The extended support is intended to cushion residents and businesses on the smaller islands from fuel-price inequalities that have persisted for years.
