Fright in Tenerife as abandoned hotel partially collapses

A chilling incident unfolded in Tenerife on Monday as a partially constructed 22-story hotel on the north coast of the island suffered a significant collapse.

The building, widely known as 'the skeleton', located in La Matanza de Acentejo in Añaza, was abandoned in the 1970s and is due to be demolished soon, but nature started the job for them!

Startled onlookers along the Las Rojas coast in the neighbouring town of El Sauzal, wondered what was happening when they heard a huge crash as a large central part of the old construction collapsed and caused a landslide down the cliffs below.

Fortunately, as images show, the debris tumbled down the cliffs and into the sea without causing any personal injuries or harm to surrounding buildings.

The Santa Cruz council announced in September that they have awarded the contract to take down the building which has been an eerie landmark in Tenerife for 50 years.

The Urban Planning Department has tried, without success, on many occasions to locate the owners of the site to get the structure removed, as it is a privately owned site so the law dictates they couldn't just knock it down.

However, it has now been classed as a dangerous structure, so they are able to do so. This incident on Monday shows it is the correct decision.
