The Canary Islands Government has officially launched a new funding programme aimed at accelerating the transition to cleaner transport, with grants of up to €30,000 available for the purchase of electric and zero-emission vehicles.
The scheme, managed by the regional Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy, has a total budget of €1.875 million and is co-financed through the 2021–2027 European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) programme.
The initiative is designed to support both the acquisition of electric vehicles for passenger transport services and the installation of publicly accessible charging infrastructure across the archipelago.
Up to €30,000 Per Vehicle
The vehicle grant programme is aimed primarily at businesses and professionals operating in the transport sector, including:
- Public and private passenger transport companies
- Taxi licence holders
- VTC (private hire vehicle) operators
The amount awarded will depend on the category of vehicle being purchased and whether an older vehicle is scrapped as part of the process.
Under the scheme, grants can reach up to €30,000 per vehicle, making it one of the most significant mobility support programmes currently available in the Canary Islands.
More Charging Points Planned
A second line of funding focuses on expanding the islands' charging infrastructure.
The grants will support the installation of publicly accessible charging points of various capacities. In some cases, particularly for local councils and public-sector organisations, funding may cover up to 100% of eligible installation costs.
The goal is to improve charging availability and encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles throughout the islands.
Funding Split Between Key Sectors
The programme includes dedicated funding allocations for different groups of applicants:
- Transport companies and professionals
- Local councils
- Island councils (Cabildos)
Each sector has been allocated up to €625,000.
Funding will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until the available budget is exhausted.
Applications Open Until 13th July
Applications opened on 12th June and will remain available until 13th July 2026 through the Ministry's electronic application portal.
Mariano Hernández Zapata, the Canary Islands Minister for Ecological Transition and Energy, described sustainable mobility as a key element of the region's environmental strategy.
He said the grants would help modernise transport fleets, expand charging infrastructure and create new opportunities for businesses and public authorities committed to cleaner and more efficient transport solutions.
Information Session for Applicants
To help potential applicants understand the scheme, the Government has also organised an online information session on 19th June at 11:00am.
The one-hour webinar will explain eligibility requirements, application procedures and funding conditions. Representatives from local authorities, business organisations, transport associations and energy agencies are expected to take part.
The event is open to taxi operators, transport companies, public bodies and other organisations interested in applying for funding.
The latest initiative forms part of the Canary Islands Government's wider strategy to reduce transport emissions and support the transition towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient transport network across the archipelago.
