A tragic scene unfolded this morning (Wednesday) at Botija beach in Gáldar, where a 50-year-old man was found dead after falling into the sea. Emergency teams reached him within minutes, but he was already in cardiac arrest and could not be revived.
The alarm was raised just after 8 am when a witness called the 112 emergency hotline to report a person floating face down near the shore. Medical crews from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), along with the Guardia Civil, Local Police and the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium, rushed to the beach.
Officers quickly located the body and mobilised both the rescue helicopter and the Guardia Civil’s elite underwater unit, GEAS. Divers recovered the man and transported him to the port of Agaete, where the body remained under guard until the correct authorities arrived.
The Guardia Civil has taken charge of the investigation and is now working to establish how the man ended up in the water and whether it was accidental.
This incident adds to a series of similar tragedies across the islands in recent months. In Tenerife, a man died earlier this year after being pulled from the sea in critical condition, while another fisherman lost his life after falling into the water in Icod de los Vinos.
Coastal authorities continue to warn residents and tourists to take extreme care near rocky shorelines and unpredictable surf conditions, especially during winter swells.
