Adeje Town Hall has moved forward with its strategy to increase the supply of affordable housing in the municipality by reactivating the local Housing Promotion Agency. During today’s plenary meeting (Thursday 4th December), councillors approved the transfer of two municipal plots valued at €1.3 million to EMSA, the public company responsible for managing housing projects.

The two sites, located in the Los Olivos area close to the local secondary school and the Las Nieves neighbourhood, cover more than 3,000m² and will be used to build around 90 new affordable homes.

Architectural work is already underway to speed up the process, with early construction activity expected to be visible before summer 2026. Subject to contracting procedures and the progress of works, the full build could take around two years.

This marks the first phase of the wider Adeje Housing Plan, which aims to deliver approximately 200 affordable homes within the next six years through additional land allocations already being assessed.

Tackling a Growing Housing Need

Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga stressed that the local government is determined to tackle the housing crisis impacting the south of Tenerife, where booming tourism and job creation continue to push demand and prices upward.

“We are fully committed to providing real solutions to the housing problem,” he said. “We are not only transferring public land so these developments can become a reality, we are also assuming the costs necessary to prepare the plots. Our aim is to ensure that families can access decent, affordable housing as soon as possible.”

Adeje has already transferred two plots in Armeñime for the construction of 51 public homes by the regional government, although the project has faced delays. The Town Hall has officially requested clarification from the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI), as work should have already begun.

Earlier this year, Adeje also asked the regional government to designate the municipality as a stressed housing area under Spain’s Right to Housing Law due to high demand and unaffordable prices.

Building Homes with Community in Mind

This housing initiative is part of a broader urban development vision focused on creating neighbourhoods that are well-connected and well-equipped, with schools, public services, businesses, green areas, and local community facilities.

The council also continues to support residents through rental assistance, renovation grants, and emergency measures to prevent eviction or utility disconnection. Young people under 35 can also access government-backed support to help purchase their first home.

Adeje Town Hall highlighted its proven track record, having delivered or improved around 1,000 affordable homes in the early 2000s. Although the programme was paused during the financial crisis and property crash, the municipality has now stepped up once again to meet today’s pressing housing needs.
