The Adeje Council started to take down the fences surrounding the last bit of ‘green area’ in San Eugenio today in the south of Tenerife after local residents stopped the construction of a new 5-storey underground car park which would have destroyed the area.
Local residents were in uproar when hoardings went up around the park last year, with a sign informing of the new project to build an underground parking facility for Puerto Colon, and protested against it urging the Adeje Council to look into it further claiming another car park isn’t needed but the green area is, and the council listened and people power prevailed.
The company behind the project, Parking Puerto Colon SL, were given ten days to remove the hoardings from the site so that a municipal gardening team could access it to return the area back to its former glory for public use.
However, that period came and went and nothing happened, the fences stayed where they were. But today, after getting the full authorisation necessary the council maintenance teams have started taking them down and will now get to work rejuvenating the park again.
In the meantime, Parking Puerto Colon SL with have to pay all costs for the removal of the fences, a daily fine for ignoring council instructions and leaving them standing, and hopefully, for the cost of the work on the gardens.
