The Spanish Met Office (AEMET) has updated its weather forecast for the Canary Islands for today, Friday 18th July, warning of three adverse weather phenomena that could affect both residents and tourists across several of the islands.
Despite a general dip in temperatures across the archipelago, high temperatures are still expected in some areas, particularly in the south and west of Gran Canaria where they could reach up to 37°C, activating an orange alert. In the eastern part of Tenerife, temperatures may rise to 34°C in mid-altitude areas.
The calima, a haze of dust from the Sahara, will persist during the morning, especially at higher altitudes, but is expected to ease as the afternoon progresses.
Strong Winds and Coastal Alerts
AEMET has also kept wind alerts in place. Gusts of up to 90 km/h were recorded overnight in higher and mid-altitude areas of the southeast and southwest of Gran Canaria, as well as parts of La Gomera, El Hierro, and Lanzarote.
These islands remain under yellow wind alerts, with expected gusts of up to 80 km/h in El Hierro and La Gomera, and up to 70 km/h in Lanzarote, particularly in exposed areas.
In addition to the wind and heat, there are warnings for adverse coastal conditions. The east, south, and west coasts of both Tenerife and Gran Canaria may experience northeasterly winds reaching up to 61 km/h (Force 7), particularly through the channels between the islands. Swimmers, sailors, and beachgoers are advised to exercise caution.
Localised Conditions Across the Islands
While the northeast trade winds will blow strongly in mountainous areas, the rest of the archipelago will experience milder conditions, with breezes in southwestern coastal zones. Despite the drop in temperatures, the general atmosphere will remain hot and dry, and humidity levels are expected to be low in certain parts of the islands.
Safety Advice for Residents and Visitors
The regional emergency services and health authorities continue to advise the public to:
- Stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during the hottest hours (from midday to early evening).
- Use sun protection and wear lightweight clothing.
- Avoid physical exertion in high-temperature areas.
Stay safe and take appropriate precautions while enjoying your time in the Canary Islands.
