The Canary Islands are set for another spell of intense heat over the coming days, with temperatures rising well above the seasonal average. According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), southern parts of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura will see highs of over 32°C this Sunday (14th September), climbing to more than 34°C on Monday (15th).
The hot conditions are expected to peak at the start of the week, with Tuesday likely to bring another surge in temperatures before they ease slightly midweek. Even so, the weather will remain warmer than usual for mid-September, with an atmosphere more typical of the summer.
What this means for tourists
For visitors planning beach days, excursions, or hikes, the heat will be a major factor to consider:
- Avoid the midday sun: UV levels will be high, so try to stay in the shade between 12:00pm and 4:00pm, when the sun is strongest.
- Stay hydrated: Carry bottled water at all times, particularly on day trips or while walking around resorts.
- Plan excursions early or late: Hiking, cycling, and outdoor activities are best done in the morning or evening when it’s cooler.
- Use sun protection: Apply high-factor sunscreen regularly, wear hats, and use light clothing to protect from direct sunlight.
- Look after vulnerable travellers: Children, elderly people, and pets are especially sensitive to heat.
Outlook for the coming weeks
AEMET forecasts that the warm spell will continue through the week of 22nd–28th September, with little rainfall expected across the archipelago. The trend could extend into early October, when temperatures are also likely to remain above average.
For residents and holidaymakers alike, the message is clear: enjoy the sunshine, but take sensible precautions to stay safe in the heat.
