After several days of warm temperatures and hazy skies, many may have thought winter had come to an early end in the Canary Islands. However, a noticeable shift in the weather is on the way, with rain, cooler temperatures and strong northerly winds expected to affect the entire archipelago over the coming days.

All islands remain under a yellow weather warning for calima until at least the end of today, Tuesday, according to the state meteorological agency, AEMET.

Tuesday: Winds Turning Northerly

Hazy conditions will persist, with generally clear skies. Some cloud is expected in the north of Tenerife and the western islands later in the day.

Temperatures will remain stable or dip slightly, with a more noticeable drop in night-time temperatures on La Palma. Winds will begin to shift, turning northerly from midday onwards in the western islands and later in the eastern islands. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura may experience strong south-easterly gusts in inland and west coast areas.

Wednesday: Calima Clears, Cooler Air Arrives

By tomorrow, Wednesday, current yellow warnings are expected to be lifted as the calima subsides.

Cloud will develop in the north of the islands, while other areas remain mostly clear. Light rain is forecast late in the day in the north of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Both minimum and maximum temperatures will fall. The drop will be particularly noticeable at mid-level altitudes and summits on La Palma, La Gomera and north-east Tenerife. Moderate northerly winds will strengthen during the afternoon, with strong intervals on east and west-facing slopes.

Thursday: Rain and Strong Northerly Winds

Thursday is expected to bring more widespread cloud, especially over the mountainous islands, with intervals elsewhere.

Light to locally moderate rain is forecast in northern areas. Temperatures will fall further, especially inland and at higher altitudes. In Tenerife and Gran Canaria, the drop could be significant away from the coast.

Moderate northerly winds will dominate, with strong gusts likely in exposed areas. Very strong gusts are possible at mid-altitudes and summits.

Friday and the Weekend: Unsettled but Uncertain

According to the European ECMWF forecasting model, there is still some uncertainty due to the range of the forecast. However, scattered showers are currently expected to continue on Friday and Saturday in the north of the higher islands. Rain is also possible in the south of Tenerife.

The heaviest accumulations are forecast for north-east Tenerife (including Anaga and the metropolitan area), as well as Tacoronte and Tegueste in the north of the island. Northern Gran Canaria and northern La Palma could also see notable rainfall.

Strong northerly winds are expected to persist across the archipelago into the weekend. By Sunday, further light, scattered showers may affect parts of the islands.

Current projections suggest these unsettled conditions will continue into early next week, with winds gradually veering north-easterly but remaining strong.
