The Spanish government has confirmed that all eight airports managed by Aena in the Canary Islands will undergo major works as part of the next investment programme, covering the period 2027 to 2031.
The projects together exceed €800 million, forming the basis of the new Airport Regulation Document (DORA).
It will include extensive terminal upgrades at Tenerife Sur, Tenerife Norte, Lanzarote, and Gran Canaria airports, as well as improvements at Fuerteventura, El Hierro, La Palma, and La Gomera.
Tenerife Sur will receive the single largest investment, with €550 million allocated to a complete remodelling of the terminal area. The works will expand the terminal space by 50% with a redesigned façade, new check-in areas, upgraded boarding gates, and modernised facilities to boost capacity and improve passenger flow.
Tenerife Norte will see €250 million in investment, with plans to enlarge the terminal by 40%. This includes more check-in counters, expanded security controls, additional boarding gates, larger baggage reclaim areas, and redesigned parking and access routes in coordination with the TF-5 road project.
Lanzarote’s César Manrique Airport will undergo an expansion with new check-in areas, passport control points, baggage reclaim belts, and improved passenger services. The two existing terminals will be joined together under a redesigned roof, nearly doubling the space available, while keeping a dedicated area for inter-island flights.
Gran Canaria Airport will focus on adapting its terminal to new high-tech security checks, upgrading the exterior, improving the arrivals hall, and refurbishing parking facilities.
Fuerteventura Airport will also receive upgrades to security technology and building services, while future expansions are being considered.
El Hierro Airport will benefit from new aircraft parking positions, resurfaced pavements, upgraded communications, and sustainability measures, including LED lighting. An extra €1 million will go towards increasing car park capacity by 20%.
La Palma Airport will see investment in runway safety, terminal improvements, noise reduction, and renewable energy, including new wind turbines.
La Gomera Airport will receive upgrades to its runway surface, terminal processes, safety systems, and IT infrastructure, alongside the installation of a new solar park on airport land.
The government stressed that these investments will not only improve passenger experience but also strengthen the Canary Islands’ role as a key international hub for tourism and inter-island connectivity.
