The Government of the Canary Islands, through the Directorate General of Emergencies, has declared a rain pre-alert for Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro from 10:00am today, Monday, 5th January.

According to an official statement, the decision is based on data from the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and other available sources, applied under the Canary Islands’ Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Weather (PEFMA).

The pre-alert particularly affects the north-facing slopes of all five islands, including areas exposed to north-west and north-east winds.

Throughout Monday, persistent rainfall is expected across the northern side of these islands. Forecasts indicate significant rain potentially exceeding 40mm in 12 hours in northern Gran Canaria, with similar conditions not ruled out for the other islands under the alert. Rain is most likely during the second half of the day.

Conditions are expected to be especially unsettled in the mid-altitude northern areas, with a generally wet and unpleasant day ahead.

The regional government is urging the public to follow official self-protection advice issued by the Directorate General of Emergencies.
