3.1 magnitude earthquake recorded northwest of Fuerteventura

An earthquake measuring 3.1 magnitude on the Richter scale was recorded yesterday morning (Monday), approximately 18 kilometres off the coast of Jarugo, located to the west of Fuerteventura.

According to reports from the IGN, the epicentre was situated at a depth of 15 kilometres beneath the ocean floor.

The tremor was felt by residents across the island, particularly in areas such as Betancuria and El Cotillo. However, no damage or disruptions to daily life have been reported, and local authorities confirm there is no cause for concern.

This type of seismic movement is considered normal in the Canary Islands due to their volcanic origin. The region frequently experiences similar events as part of ongoing geological processes deep beneath the Earth's crust.

Local authorities encourage the public to remain calm and informed, emphasising that such seismic events are part of the natural activity surrounding the archipelago.
