A 20-year-old man has died after drowning at La Laja Beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria yesterday afternoon (Tuesday). The tragic incident occurred at around midday, when the Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received alerts from beachgoers that someone was struggling in the water.

According to emergency service sources, the victim, a young man of Maghrebi origin, had been playing in the sea with a friend when, for reasons still under investigation, he began having difficulty staying afloat.

He called for help, and several bathers rushed to his aid, managing to pull him to shore, but by the time he was brought out of the water, the man was already unconscious.

Several beachgoers and a healthcare worker who happened to be nearby began resuscitation efforts, which were later continued by paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC).

Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, they were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The police took charge of his body until the judicial authorities gave permission for it to be removed and taken for official identification and an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
