Torres: Unvaccinated people are a potential danger to society and recovery

The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Victor Torres has sent a strong message to those people who keep saying they want the pandemic to be over but aren’t getting vaccinated, highlighting that over 85% of those in ICU in La Candelaria hospital have decided not to be vaccinated.

Torres said this when talking to the media during his participation in the president's conference held yesterday (Friday) in Salamanca in mainland Spain, giving the example of the Tenerife hospital ICU occupancy to exemplify the high contagiousness, particularly of the Delta variant, in people who have not had the coronavirus vaccine.

“We have just had over 850 new infections in 24 hours, and Tenerife has a 25% ICU occupancy, which never exceeded 18% in the worst months of the pandemic previously”.

“Therefore, unvaccinated people have to receive a clear message from society: firstly because they are endangering their own lives; secondly, because they are a potential danger for the rest of the population because the contagiousness is there, particularly if not vaccinated; and thirdly because we all want this to be over and the only way for that to happen is through herd immunity with vaccination, and to achieve that, we need everyone eligible for a vaccine to have one as soon as possible.”

Torres concluded by saying: “Of those 28 Covid patients in ICU, two have had one jab, and two have been fully vaccinated. But I repeat, 24 out of 28 are in ICU because they have not been vaccinated.”
