State of Alarm ending triggers holiday bookings for May and 24% are for the Canaries

Holiday reservations from Spaniards wanting to travel during the month of May, shot up 122% in the week after Pedro Sánchez announced that the State of Alarm will not be extended when it finishes on May 9th. This is according to the holiday booking website Destinia, which adds that 24% of total reservations are for travel to the Canary Islands.

The search and booking trend for the summer months has remained stable, growing regularly from week to week as summer approaches, however, reservations for May were still very stagnant, but as a result of the announcement there has been a substantial change in the number of reservations for that month, which denotes the growing interest of Spaniards in returning to travel as vaccination is accelerated.

24% of all reservations for May are for the Canary Islands, but it is noteworthy that the city of Madrid is in second position with 8%, followed by Alicante, a beach destination on the west coast of Spain, with 6% of the bookings made.

Destinia also says that in this last week booking records have been broken; reaching 60% of the number of reservations in 2019, data that has not been seen since the first half of September 2020.
