The Canary Islands asks the TSJC to extend limit on group sizes in August

The Canary Islands Government has agreed to request an extension to the Higher Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) to limit the maximum number of people allowed to meet in family and social gatherings during the month of August. The Governing Council has met in an extra meeting today to analyze the ruling of the Supreme Court after they rejected the curfew in Tenerife.

The spokesman for the Government of the Canary Islands, Julio Pérez, said after the meeting, “The Government has asked the TSJC for permission to extend this measure for a month during August, as it currently ends on July 31st.”

“This measure is the one that governs the group size limitations of non-cohabitants in the different alert levels, of up to 10 people at level 1, at level 2 a maximum of 6 people, a maximum of 4 people at alert level 3; and on level 4, up to 4 people. There will be no limits on the group of cohabitants and the same restriction will be applied between cohabitants and non-cohabitants," said Pérez, recalling that this measure was already approved by the TSJC last May.

The Administrative Litigation Chamber of the Supreme has ruled against the curfew in the Canary Islands after the community's appeal during the fifth wave of the virus, after the Superior Court of Justice denied the curfew on July 14th for the islands with the highest incidence of the virus, i.e. levels 3 and 4.

However, the new refusal of the Supreme Court, enabled to act in record time thanks to an express reform carried out by the Government when the state of alarm ended in May, once again puts communities in trouble that, like the Canary Islands, intend to impose new hourly limits at night to stop the spread of the pandemic.
