Covid update: 148 new cases today, 47% of them in Tenerife
The Ministry of Health has reported of 148 new cases of Covid-19 in the Canary Islands today. Tenerife has the most new cases detected with 69 (47%), followed by Gran Canaria with 51, Fuerteventura with 19 who continue their upward trend, and in fact now have the highest seven day incidence rate of all the islands of 93.25, and Lanzarote with just 6 cases who continue their downward trend.
They have also reported of one Covid related death in Gran Canaria, which is a crew member from the oceanographic research vessel 'Hespérides'. First sergeant Francisco Rodríguez Sánchez, was admitted to the Doctor Negrín University Hospital in Las Palmas on January 9th after an outbreak broke out on the ship.
As reported by the Ministry of Defense in an official statement, “the Navy has deeply regretted the passing of Rodríguez Sánchez, who had been in the ICU of the Canarian hospital since January 13th, after the worsening of his clinical situation.”
The 'Hespérides' docked in the port of Las Palmas on January 4th after a Covid-19 outbreak was detected on board that affected 39 of its 58 crew members, when making it’s journey from Cartagena (Murcia) to Punta Arenas (Chile ) to participate in the Oceanographic Campaign, the statement said.
Twenty-four days later, on January 28th, the ship set sail from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria back to its base in Cartagena after overcoming the coronavirus outbreak, leaving First sergeant Rodríguez Sánchez in ICU in Gran Canaria, as confirmed by the Navy in their statement.
