A 38-year-old man has died after getting into difficulty in the sea at Playa de Garcey in Pájara, Fuerteventura. The incident began at 7:10pm last night (Sunday), when the 112 emergency coordination centre received a call reporting that a person was in trouble in the water.

Guardia Civil and Policía Local officers were sent to the scene and managed to rescue the man from the sea, and paramedics started to treat him as he was showing signs of drowning and was in cardiac arrest.

They performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an attempt to revive him, but the efforts were unsuccessful and his death was confirmed at the scene.

A wider emergency response was also activated because of the location of the incident. Maritime Rescue and firefighters from Pájara were mobilised, with both aerial and ground resources involved in the operation.

Guardia Civil officers subsequently began the necessary investigation and formal procedures surrounding the death.

No further information about the man's identity has been officially released.
