Covid update: Only 145 new cases, but ICU occupancy getting critical

The Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands has reported of 145 new cases of coronavirus this Sunday. The total number of accumulated cases in the Islands is now 38,440 with 6,852 active, of which 83 are admitted to the ICU and 292 are hospitalized in wards.

In the last 24 hours, the death of a 72-year-old woman has been reported in Lanzarote, who was admitted to hospital and suffered from previous pathologies.

Of the new cases, Tenerife had the most with 53, followed by Gran Canaria with 45, Lanzarote with 37, and Fuerteventura with 7. All the stats are continuing to go in the right direction with a downward trend, but the most worrying one is the number of Covid patients in ICU.

The Ministry of Health specifies that when the percentage of Covid patients in ICU exceeds 15%, that the hospital is heading towards a critical situation. Currently the percentage for the islands is 23% as an average, but is much worse in Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

15% may not sound much, but when combined with non-Covid patients, the ICU beds in the Canaries are almost at 66% of capacity, with the Hospital Dr. José Molina Orosa in Arrecife at 70%, and the University Hospital de Dr. Negrín in Las Palmas at 96% of capacity, not forgetting that hospital pressure is one of the main criteria taken into account when decisions are made regarding Coronavirus restrictions.
