Tenerife has recorded at least four separate fire outbreaks in the last 48 hours, with emergency teams preventing each of them from developing into a larger incident.

The fires have occurred at different locations in Bajamar, La Laguna and La Orotava, during a period of heightened wildfire risk caused by the recent hot and dry conditions.

BRIFOR forest-fire crews and Tenerife firefighters have been involved in tackling the incidents, with the rapid response of emergency resources preventing the outbreaks from spreading.

One of the most recent incidents occurred in La Orotava, close to the subida de Bebederos and Camino de San Agustín.

That fire affected approximately 300 square metres before being brought under control, with firefighters, BRIFOR personnel, Local Police and the Guardia Civil involved in the response.

The four outbreaks reported over Friday and Saturday were all brought under control without developing into major forest fires.

Fire restrictions remain in place

The incidents come after the Tenerife Cabildo introduced Grade 1 wildfire prevention measures across the island because of the increased risk associated with the recent weather conditions.

Restrictions include a ban on lighting fires in designated wildfire-risk areas, burning agricultural or forestry waste and using fireworks.

Smoking is also prohibited in affected areas, including the use of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices, along with equipment or machinery capable of producing sparks.

The Canary Islands Government had placed Tenerife under a wildfire alert during the recent spell of high temperatures. The latest official update reduces Tenerife to pre-alert from Sunday morning, while Gran Canaria remains under alert because humidity there is expected to recover more slowly.

Residents and visitors are being urged to continue taking precautions and immediately report any signs of fire or smoke to the emergency services on 112.
