A man has been arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking after Guardia Civil officers discovered €30,545 in cash and suspected drugs during an operation in Gran Canaria.

The arrest took place in Santa María de Guía during a surveillance operation carried out by officers from the Guardia Civil's Citizen Security Unit (USECIC).

Officers noticed a vehicle whose occupant was carrying a plastic bag and appeared nervous after becoming aware of the police presence.

During the identification process, the man put the bag on the ground. A young woman then approached and attempted to take it inside a nearby apartment building, but officers intervened before she could do so.

An initial inspection uncovered a substantial amount of cash in smaller denominations along with other items considered relevant to the investigation.

The operation ultimately resulted in the seizure of €30,545, as well as suspected drugs.

Because a large number of residents had begun watching the police operation from nearby homes and surrounding areas, officers moved the bag to a secure location before carrying out a more detailed inspection.

The seized substances have been sent for analysis and weighing.

The man was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking, and the case, together with the seized items, has been placed before the Civil and Investigating Section of the Court of Instance in Santa María de Guía.
