Police break up a ‘botellon’ of 50 people in Guargacho in the south of Tenerife

An official press release from the Guardia Civil, shows the report of them intervening a ‘macro-botellon’ on Saturday night at the Guargacho football pitch in San Miguel de Abona. 50 youngsters in their late teens and twenties were all grouped together, drinking alcohol, with loud music, no social distancing and no masks.

These ‘botellons’ break several anti-Covid measures in the following ways, and are seen as a major cause of infections among young people, and are why the Government wants to impose a curfew in levels 3 and 4:

1) Drinking in public places is not permitted. Only at home or on licenced premises.

2) The maximum number of people allowed to meet in a group is 6.

3) If people are non-cohabitants, a safety distance of 1.5 metres must be kept at all times.

4) Although masks are not mandatory outside in public places, they are obligatory if no distancing is kept.

On this occasion, the Guardi Civil noticed a concentration of around 50 people, with a large number of vehicles and loud music at the Guargacho football pitch during a routine patrol at approximately 2am on Saturday night.

The vast majority of the attendees were consuming alcoholic beverages and were between 18 and 30 years old, according to the police statement. After subsequent identification, the gathering was dissolved and the corresponding sanctions and fines were drawn up and processed.

According to the report, last weekend 22 sanctions were imposed for non-compliance with the prevention and containment measures against coronavirus, for this type of activity in the south of Tenerife.
