A 70-year-old woman is fighting for her life after suffering a cardiac arrest while swimming at Los Cristianos beach this afternoon (Monday), in one of the most serious beach emergencies reported in the south of Tenerife this month.

Lifeguards rushed into the water to rescue the woman and immediately began CPR on the sand as she showed no signs of breathing. Paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) took over on arrival, carrying out advanced resuscitation techniques until they managed to reverse the cardiac arrest and stabilise her.

She was taken to hospital, where she remains in a critical condition. The Local Police, the National Police and the Port Police all assisted in the intensive rescue operation.

The south of Tenerife has seen several serious water emergencies involving people who got into difficulty while swimming in recent years. Lifeguards in areas such as Las Vistas, Playa de Troya and Playa Fañabé regularly respond to incidents linked to sudden changes in sea conditions, strong currents and medical complications while in the water. Emergency teams say that many of the most critical cases involve older swimmers or people who underestimate the strength of the Atlantic, even on days when the sea appears calm from the shore.

Paramedics and lifeguards have also noticed a rise in callouts where beachgoers suffer medical episodes while swimming, including fainting, respiratory problems and, in the most severe cases, cardiac arrest. Several of these emergencies have required rapid CPR and advanced medical intervention on the sand.
