Woman drowns in Puerto del Carmen, the second fatal incident on the same day
A woman has died after drowning yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, at Playa Matagorda beach, in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote. This was the second fatal drowning in the Canary Islands on the same day.
The incident occurred at around 4:15pm, when the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received an alert that lifeguards had pulled the woman from the sea in cardiac arrest and were attempting resuscitation.
Two ambulances were dispatched to the beach, along with a nurse from the Tías Health Centre. Despite continuing advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), medical staff were unable to revive her and could only confirm her death.
The Guardia Civil took charge of the official proceedings and guarded the body until a coroner gave permission for it to be removed and taken for official identification and autopsy.
Earlier the same day, a man also lost his life after being rescued in cardiac arrest from the sea at Las Teresitas beach in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Lifeguards and SUC personnel attempted resuscitation but were unable to save him.
