The Guardia Civil have apprehended a 25-year-old woman in Lanzarote as she disembarked from a ferry at the Arrecife port, carrying a package containing over 800 grams of cocaine hidden in her backpack.
During a routine passenger inspection on January 20th, people arriving from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria were screened as they got off the ferry. Officers identified several passengers that they wanted to search further, including one female passenger who seemed very nervous and acted suspiciously in the presence of the police.
Because of this, officers proceeded to officially identify and question her before conducting a superficial search of her belongings. However, during a more thorough examination of the backpack she was carrying, they found a package weighing 824 grams, which, when tested, was proven to be cocaine with a street value of over 60,000 euros.
As a result, appropriate legal proceedings were initiated, and the detained woman was brought before the Arrecife Magistrate's Court, however, she was released on the same day. Authorities continue to investigate the incident to ensure comprehensive legal action is taken.
