Violent clash between police and squatters during an eviction in Fuerteventura

A judicial eviction in Corralejo, Fuerteventura, turned into a violent confrontation on Tuesday (March 5th) according to a police report, resulting in three people arrested by the Guardia Civil and three injured officers, two from the Guardia Civil and one from the Local Police of La Oliva.

Specifically, the detainees are accused of resisting and disobeying law enforcement officers by barricading themselves in the residence and refusing to leave. The situation escalated when one person doused themselves in gasoline and threatened to set themselves on fire.

In the report, the Guardia Civil stated that the incident took place at around 12:00pm when officers from Corralejo, supported by a patrol from the Local Police of La Oliva, were assisting judicial officials in carrying out an eviction order.

Inside the property, the occupants had barricaded themselves in and refused to leave displaying an agitated and confrontational attitude toward the police officers.

After several attempts to convince the woman to change her mind and allow officers to access, she remained adamant about staying in the property. Consequently, at around 1:00pm, judicial officers ordered the police to break open the entrance door.

Whilst doing this, the woman inside, holding a container of what appeared to be flammable liquid, doused herself with it and threw the container outside, splashing one of the Guardia Civil officers nearby and threatened to set herself on fire.

Faced with this situation, the officers managed to enter the property, engaging in a struggle with the people inside to prevent any self-inflicted harm.

Once the lives of the three occupants, and all officers on the scene were safeguarded, the three people were arrested and taken into custody for the preparation of official reports and their subsequent referral to the Duty Court.
