Dense fog at Tenerife North Airport significantly disrupted flight operations yesterday afternoon (Wednesday). According to AENA, nine flights were diverted to alternate airports, and two flights were cancelled due to poor visibility affecting take-off and landings at the airport.
The cancelled flights were scheduled to depart from Gran Canaria and La Palma, and of the nine diversions, eight flights were redirected to Tenerife South, including two from Madrid, one from La Palma, two from Gran Canaria, and one each from El Hierro, Lanzarote, and Barcelona.
In addition to the cancellations and diversions, several flights to and from Tenerife North experienced significant delays, with some flights from Gran Canaria circling the skies for almost an hour, waiting for clearance to land.
Upon landing, low visibility required airport staff to use large spotlights to guide passengers safely to the terminal.
The situation highlighted the challenges faced by the airport during adverse weather conditions, impacting both passengers and flight schedules.
