The National Police have apprehended a British fugitive in Tenerife with an international arrest warrant against him for alleged drug trafficking and road safety offences, that could result in a life sentence in the UK, according to an official police press release issued today (Monday).
The investigation began after Interpol informed Spanish authorities that a British member of a criminal organisation wanted for drug trafficking was living in Tenerife, having used up to 11 different identities to evade capture.
Through diligent investigative work, the National Police located the wanted man, who was planning to flee to Germany and arrested him at Tenerife South Airport on July 11th before he could get on a plane. Following this, he was placed under judicial authority and awaiting extradition back to the UK.
The National Police have detained 14 people in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife so far this year with the cooperation and collaboration of international authorities.
These arrests were made for various offences, including sexual abuse of minors, drug trafficking, fraud, road safety violations, and involvement in international police operations. Additionally, ten extraditions to different countries have been carried out.
Earlier in July, the National Police launched a campaign to locate several fugitives wanted by both national and international courts. Some of theme, including those sought for over a decade, have already been apprehended.
