The emergency services have recovered the body of a man who drowned off the coast of La Oliva, Fuerteventura, after he fell into the sea in a remote and hard-to-reach area.
The incident was reported at 12:50p.m. on Saturday (20th April), when the Guardia Civil contacted the Canary Islands' Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) to alert them of the accident involving a fisherman.
Upon arrival, firefighters from La Oliva assessed the scene but confirmed that a land rescue was not feasible due to the inaccessibility of the location. In response, a GES helicopter was dispatched.
The helicopter crew successfully located the man and hoisted him aboard. He was then flown to a nearby landing site, where a medicalised ambulance from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) was waiting. Sadly, medical personnel at the scene confirmed that the man had died.
The Guardia Civil took charge of the necessary legal proceedings in connection with the incident so that the body could be taken for autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
