There were moments of real tension in Los Abrigos, in the south of Tenerife on Friday afternoon, when two 25-year-old women were caught in difficulties by the sea outside the natural pools, according to the Canary Islands’ emergency services coordination centre (CECOES).
The alarm was raised at 2:45pm, when witnesses reported that both women were struggling in the water and that one of them had managed to cling to a rock to avoid being dragged out by the current.
Air rescue and hospital transfer
Emergency resources were immediately dispatched to the area, and a Maritime Rescue helicopter located one of the women, who showed signs of drowning.
She was rescued with assistance from Tenerife Fire Brigade and airlifted to Tenerife South Airport, where a medical team stabilised her before she was transferred by ambulance to Hospiten Sur Hospital.
The second woman, who sustained minor injuries, was helped to safety by firefighters and escorted to medical staff on site. She was later taken to the San Isidro Health Centre for treatment.
Emergency coordination
Police services collaborated with rescue teams and carried out the necessary incident reports.
The event highlights the dangers of sudden sea conditions around Tenerife’s natural pools, popular with both locals and visitors. Authorities continue to advise caution when swimming in open coastal areas, especially where strong currents are common.
