Two women got into difficulty while paddle surfing off Puerto del Carmen on Monday morning and had to be rescued by emergency services. The pair were spotted struggling to get back to shore in the El Poril area just after 11:30 am.
Conditions made it impossible for them to return safely, so EMERLAN (Lanzarote’s emergency and rescue service) quickly activated the GES-EMERLAN rescue boat.
They were brought safely on board and taken to the port of La Tiñosa. Thankfully, both were unharmed, but the incident is another reminder of how quickly the sea can change.
Authorities are once again urging people enjoying paddle surfing and other water sports to be extra careful, especially in popular areas where conditions can become tricky without warning.
EMERLAN has been kept busy this Summer by more than just paddleboarders. At the end of June, they stepped in to help three tourists in Puerto del Carmen who were being carried out to sea on inflatable loungers. They were rescued just in time, and all walked away with no injuries.
A few weeks earlier, over a single weekend in Lanzarote, six people needed saving in three separate emergencies, including an adrift boat, a runaway jet‑ski, and tourists on lilos swept away by the current.
And let’s not forget how just two weeks ago, they came to the aid of three crew members stranded on a disabled vessel two miles off Playa Blanca, heaved them aboard, and towed them back to port.
Between paddleboard dramas and float-away fun, it’s been a wild and sobering reminder of how quickly things can go off course.
