11 people have been injured in an accident involving a tourist train, which circulates on roads, including 3 children, after it hit a kerb and tipped over in Cala d'Or in Majorca on Wednesday. Several passengers were then thrown from the vehicle sparking mass panic, and police arrived quickly on the scene.
The vehicle was travelling at speed as it reached a bend and hit the kerb, and travelled another 20 yards with its back carriage flipped over before it stopped.
Some of the passengers in the carriage that flipped were dragged along the floor until it stopped; others were ‘thrown’ from the carriage at the point of impact.
Most of the injured suffered from severe cuts and grazes, but there were some with head injuries from the impact who were attended by paramedics at the scene of the accident before being taken to the Llevant hospital and the Quirón Palmaplanas.
Onlookers said: 'The driver took the bend too quickly and the back carriage just went. He didn't realise what had happened and kept driving, meanwhile, people were being dragged along the concrete at around 20mph.”
The accident has raised questions about the safety of these trains, known by many as the ‘wally trolley’ which are found in holiday resorts around Spain, including in Playa Las Americas and Puerto de La Cruz in Tenerife.
The Local Police and the Guardia Civil have opened a joint investigation into the incident.
