A 70-year-old man has died after suffering a cardiac arrest in a hotel swimming pool in Costa Adeje, despite the efforts of lifeguards and emergency services. The incident happened on Friday morning, when lifeguards at the hotel noticed the man in difficulty and pulled him from the water in a state of cardiac arrest.
They immediately began resuscitation attempts while the Canary Islands Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) 1-1-2 dispatched medical teams to the hotel.
The emergency services carried out intensive CPR and managed to stabilise the man temporarily. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but sadly, his death was confirmed shortly afterwards.
The authorities have carried out the necessary procedures in coordination with health services to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
So far in 2025, the Canary Islands have recorded 39 drowning deaths, a 17% drop compared to last year, but still one of the leading causes of accidental fatalities on the islands. Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, drownings still claim more lives in the islands each year than road accidents.
Most incidents occurred on beaches, followed by swimming pools and natural pools, with the majority of victims being men and many aged over 60.
