Tourismphobia: more anti-tourism graffiti appears in the Canary Islands

Graffiti conveying anti-tourist slogans is starting to appear across the Canary Islands, particularly in the bustling tourist district of Guanarteme in Las Palmas, the capital of Gran Canaria. The message, "Tourists and digital nomads go home," is prominently displayed on streets in this area, which is known for its high concentration of hotels, tourist apartments, and holiday homes, as well as its proximity to the popular beach of Las Canteras.

The phenomenon of "tourismphobia" is not new to Spain, with cities like Barcelona and resorts in Mallorca experiencing similar things. However, the appearance of such sentiments in Gran Canaria marks a notable shift, as the Canary Islands has been historically reliant on tourism over the past seven decades.

Jessica de León, the Minister of Tourism for the Canary Islands Government, expressed concerns about the emerging tourismphobia last summer. Guanarteme, known for its picturesque setting and vibrant tourism scene, has become the latest canvas for these expressions of discontent, highlighting the increasing tensions between the local population and the influx of visitors.

This incident follows a growing trend of opposition to tourism in the Islands, with the past year witnessing anti-tourist demonstrations in locations like Playa Las Americas in the south of Tenerife. Additionally, fake signs designed to deter visitors were discovered on a beach in the north of Tenerife.

The archipelago's economic landscape has been closely tied to the tourism industry, making this recent opposition a notable departure from the historical embrace of tourism on the islands. The graffiti serves as a visual manifestation of a sentiment that, until recently, had not prominently permeated the region.

The government and tourism authorities are trying to address these concerns, working towards finding a balance between preserving the unique beauty of the islands and addressing the challenges associated with tourism, for a more harmonious coexistence.
