Three earthquakes were recorded off the coast of Fuerteventura overnight, with the strongest measuring 3.2 in magnitude and being felt by some residents. The tremors occurred west of Los Molinos, in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, but there have been no reports of damage or injuries.
The first and strongest earthquake struck at around 11:30pm yesterday (Sunday), approximately 25 kilometres offshore. It occurred at a depth of 15 kilometres and was felt by people in the surrounding area.
Two further seismic movements were detected just before 2:30am, roughly 20 kilometres from the coast at a depth of seven kilometres. The National Geographic Institute is currently treating them as two separate events, although they may have been part of a single tremor. It has not been confirmed whether either of these was felt by residents.
The National Geographic Institute and local authorities have reminded the public that small offshore earthquakes are relatively common around the Canary Islands due to the volcanic nature of the archipelago. Events of this size are routinely monitored and do not usually pose a risk to the population.
Residents and visitors are advised that there is no cause for alarm, although anyone who feels an earthquake can report it through the National Geographic Institute's official channels to help improve seismic monitoring.
