A 34-year-old man remains in a critical condition following a knife attack in the La Isleta district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Police detained both men involved in the violent street fight yesterday evening (Tuesday).

The injured man is a Lithuanian national. He suffered a stab wound to his torso and remains in the critical care unit at Doctor Negrín University Hospital.

A 51-year-old Spanish man, suspected of carrying out the stabbing, was treated for a head injury requiring six stitches before being discharged from hospital.

The fight began shortly before 8:00pm in Luján Pérez Street, in front of numerous passers-by. Witness footage reportedly shows the men continuing to fight after the stabbing, with one eventually falling to the ground.

Emergency services received the alert at 7.45pm and sent two ambulances to nearby Juan Rejón Street, where both men received treatment before being taken to hospital.

Police said one of the men attempted to escape when officers arrived but was caught following a foot chase. A kitchen knife with a blade measuring approximately 13 centimetres was recovered during the operation.

The incident is the third serious knife-related confrontation reported in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in three weeks. Earlier cases included a street attack near Las Canteras on 4th August and an incident on 17th August in which two local police officers were injured while confronting a man armed with a large knife.

The CSIF police union has called for greater police presence, specialist training and additional equipment to deal with incidents involving weapons. The investigation into Tuesday’s fight remains ongoing.
