Three men have been arrested after the Guardia Civil uncovered a coastal drug drop, seizing 68 kilos of hashish found floating off Matas Blancas beach, in Costa Calma, on the island of Fuerteventura.
The operation dates back to 26th December, when officers detected a vessel behaving suspiciously as it approached the coastline from open sea. The alert led to a coordinated police response involving patrols from Morro Jable and Gran Tarajal.
When officers reached the area, they found three men on the coast, allegedly waiting to unload the drugs. Nearby, police found two vehicles prepared for the operation: an off-road vehicle driven by one of the suspects and a van parked with its doors open and empty, believed to be ready to transport the drugs once brought ashore.
Suspecting a stash, officers began searching the shoreline and surrounding waters. A member of the public then alerted police to several bundles floating close to the coast. The packages were recovered and brought ashore, where officers confirmed they contained pressed blocks of hashish, weighing 24 kilos.
A further sea search was carried out using a recreational boat, leading to the discovery of an additional package containing 44 kilos of the same substance. In total, 68 kilos of hashish were seized during the operation.
According to the Guardia Civil, two of the three suspects have previous convictions, including offences related to drug trafficking, smuggling and property crime. All three are now under investigation on suspicion of drug trafficking.
The investigation remains ongoing as police work to establish the origin of the shipment and whether anyone else was involved.
