The next heatwave will bring days of 40°C and nights of 30°C to the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are preparing for the arrival of an African air mass that will begin to affect the Archipelago from tomorrow (Wednesday 9th August), as reported by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), which is forecast to last for over a week with a progressive rise in temperatures.

From Thursday these temperatures will be classed as ‘extreme’ with daytimes over 40°C and night times of 30°C leading the regional Ministry of Health department to issue warnings for a risk to human health.

These yellow, orange, and red warnings are for 39 municipalities in Tenerife, La Palma, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote until at least the 13th of August, and can be extended at any time, as follows:

TENERIFE:
Red notice:
Adeje, Arona, Fasnia, Granadilla, Guía de Isora, Güimar, San Miguel de Abona, and Vilaflor (August 10th to 13th).

Orange warning: Arafo, Arico, La Orotava (August 11th to 13th)

Yellow warning: Santiago del Teide (August 11th and 12th).

LA PALMA:
Red notice:
Los Llanos de Aridane and El Paso (August 11th to 13th)

Orange warning: Fuencaliente and Tazacorte (August 11th to 13th)

Yellow warning: Breña Alta (August 11th and 12th).

GRAND CANARIA:
Red notice:
Agüimes, Artenara, Ingenio, Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Aldea de San Nicolás, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Santa Brígida, Tejeda, Valsequillo and Vega de San Mateo (August 9th to 13th)

Orange warning: Telde and Valleseco (August 11th to 13th)

Yellow warning: Teror (August 11th).

FUERTEVENTURA:
Red notice:
Antigua, Betancuria, and Tuineje (August 11th to 13th)

Orange warning: La Oliva (August 10th to 13th)

Yellow warning: Puerto del Rosario (August 11th and 12th).

LANZAROTE:
Red notice:
San Bartolomé and Tías (August 10th to 13th).

Yellow warning: Arrecife (August 11th and 12th).
