The Walk for Life solidarity march will take place on Sunday, December 1st, starting at 10:30am from Siam Mall Shopping Centre in Adeje, winding through the streets of Playa Las Americas and finishing on Avenida Las Americas, better known as The Golden Mile, in Arona.
The Canary Islands-based Fundación Carrera por la Vida, along with the councils of Arona and Adeje, officially launched the 19th edition of the Carrera por la Vida (Walk for Life) yesterday at Hotel Jardines de Nivaria in Costa Adeje, which support people affected by breast cancer.
Focus on Awareness:
Brigitte Gypen, president of the Fundación Carrera por la Vida, unveiled the theme for this year, which is raising awareness about the importance of monthly self-examinations and annual mammograms for the early detection of breast cancer.
While presenting the signature pink t-shirt designed for participants, she emphasized that such practices can save lives and reduce the severity of the disease’s impact. “With a monthly self-exam routine and an annual mammogram appointment, lives can be saved,” she said.
Community and International Support:
José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, the mayor of Adeje, commended the Foundation’s enduring efforts and highlighted the international appeal of the event.
"After 19 years, with over 5,000 participants in recent editions, this march unites people from various nationalities under the common goal of improving conditions and lives for those facing breast cancer," he stated. He stressed that addressing breast cancer is not only a medical concern but also a societal responsibility, requiring collective action and government commitment to improve the quality of life for those affected.
Similarly, Fátima Lemes Reverón, mayor of Arona, underscored the critical role of early detection in combating breast cancer, adding, “Initiatives like Carrera por la Vida inspire resilience and provide energy and motivation to those currently battling the disease.”
This year’s event will be led by its honorary ambassador, Yaiza Díaz, a journalist and presenter for RTVC. As a breast cancer survivor and advocate, Díaz has been recognized for raising awareness with courage and transparency. She will lead the march and has called for increased research funding to investigate the rising incidence of breast cancer and to develop treatments with fewer side effects and improved outcomes.
How to Participate:
Registration remains open through the event’s official website, www.carreraporlavida.org and at a stand at Siam Mall open all day on Saturday. The Foundation expressed gratitude to its sponsors, including the Government of the Canary Islands, the Tenerife Cabildo, Jardines de Nivaria Hotel, and the Adrián Hoteles Foundation, for their support in making this event possible.
Brigitte Gypen concluded by extending her thanks to all participants, sponsors, and media partners who contribute to the success of the initiative. “Every registered participant walking in solidarity makes it possible for the Foundation to develop its projects in support of men and women affected by breast cancer.”
