The Punta del Viento parking area in Las Galletas has become a hotspot for social and environmental issues due to severe neglect by the local government, according to residents and local officials. The area, now a wasteland of abandoned cars, improvised shelters with people living in tents, vans, and campervans, and a hub for illegal activities including the sale of drugs and prostitution, paints a grim picture of the pretty coastal town in the south of Tenerife.

Local councillor, Frank Tolle, has been vocal about the dire conditions in the parking area. He reports that the space has turned into an informal scrapyard with abandoned vehicles, open-air workshops, and accumulated rubbish, including animal excrement.

Tolle criticises the current governing council of Arona for their lack of response to resident complaints. He describes their management as "disastrous," highlighting that the deterioration of Punta del Viento significantly tarnishes the image of Las Galletas, a tourist town with numerous commercial premises.

He has highlighted the stark contrast between the government’s actions for the “Arona in Colours” event and their inaction regarding ongoing issues. For the event on June 15th, the area was cleared, but since then it has reverted back to its neglected state. Tolle says he finds it incomprehensible that the government has not taken similar measures to address the ongoing problems affecting residents' health and safety.

Tolle also points out the poor condition of the surrounding infrastructure, including neglected street furniture and broken signage. The Socialist Group is urging the local government to take immediate action under urban planning and environmental legislation to prevent further decline of the areas and improve living conditions.

Community and Environmental Impact

The state of the Punta del Viento parking area not only impacts the local community but also reflects poorly on the municipal corporation's efficiency and commitment to finding solutions. Residents and local business owners have repeatedly voiced their concerns, yet the lack of governmental response leaves them feeling ignored and frustrated.

The Socialist Group's call for action emphasises the need for a proactive approach to urban management and environmental conservation. Addressing the issues in Punta del Viento is crucial for restoring the area's appeal and ensuring a safe, clean environment for both residents and tourists.
