The La Palma forest fire is ‘on its last legs’

The fire that started in La Palma on Saturday is said to be “on its last legs” in the Caldera de Taburiente and is only "a few metres from dying, finally", according to the director of the forestry teams of the Cabildo who are working within the National Park.

This morning, the emergency services have already announced that the fire has barely progressed overnight in the National Park, where they were most concerned it would spread due to difficult access, and they hope that today there will be favourable conditions to extinguish it.

The troops on the ground in that part are supported by a Red Cross mountain team, and staff rotations are carried out every two hours due to the difficulty of working on the ground and the poor air quality.

The ten seaplanes and helicopters will also focus on La Caldera, which, although they have had difficulties first thing in the morning due to the presence of medium and low cloud cover, expect conditions to be better today.

Most of the 4,000 evacuees have returned to their homes, although the neighbourhood of El Roque, in Puntagorda, and the upper part of the LP-1 highway, from the Jurado ravine to El Time, remain evacuated.

The only road that remains closed is the LP-214, as well as the LP-1 at night due to work.

The worsening of air quality has led to the issuance of a recommendation to the population so that, as far as possible, they avoid going outside and practicing sports in the open air, as well as wearing a mask if necessary.
