The DGT announces the end of ITV stickers on windscreen

In a groundbreaking move towards digital transformation, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) in Spain has announced the end of the traditional ITV (MOT) stickers that have been displayed on car windscreens in Spain, including the Canary Islands for over 30 years.

This decision is part of a comprehensive strategy to digitise administrative procedures, aiming to modernise the system and bolster the efficiency of road authorities during vehicle inspections.

Instead of the traditional sticker, the DGT will introduce a new APP or electronic system, offering both authorities and drivers access to the status of their vehicles' ITV and all pertinent information digitally.

Beyond the evident administrative convenience, this innovation promises environmental benefits by curbing the costs and environmental impacts associated with producing and distributing physical stickers.

Concerns about cyber security

Nevertheless, the shift to a digital platform has sparked concerns among some users, particularly regarding data privacy and security. Reports indicate that there are safety concerns, as any potential failure in this application could expose drivers' confidential and personal information to the public.

Critics argue that the risk of digital identity theft and impersonation is a substantial consideration that the DGT must address to ensure the robustness of its security system against potential cyber threats.

At the moment, there is no confirmed date as to when the transitions will come into effect.
